What does GSM stand for? It is the Global System for Mobile communications.  Otherwise, it is a type of mobile phone. It allows you to use your cell phone in the most popular places in the world.  With the exception of some Oriental countries, you are able to use all of your cell phone services in the major cities or tourist attraction areas. 

They come in three different frequencies. The three frequencies are dual band, quad band, and tri-band.  A dual band works with 900 MHZ and 1800MHZ.  You will be able to pick up a signal anywhere in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, South America, and New Zealand.  A tri-band runs on 900, 1800, 1900 MHZ.  This covers Europe, Africa, Asia, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. The third and final frequency is the quad band.  It uses 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHZ.  This kind can pick up a signal in almost every place of the world you can you think of.

When using this type of cell phone, you need to use a SIM card.  A SIM card is required to activate your phone.  The card is included with your cell phone at the time of purchase.  It allows you to make and receive calls from around the world.  It even gives you the number for your cell phone. You need to find out if your card will be locked or not.  If it's locked that you will only be able to use the specific company's services.  It will not allow you to use another company's service to place or receive a call. A SIM call is much like a pre-paid phone card that you find for track phones.

A GSM cellular phone was made in design for political diplomats.  It is because they travel to foreign lands and still need to be able to contact others in their native county.  In some cases, certain GSM phones are not made for the United States use.  If this is the case, then place that you will be able to use the phone is Washington D.C. and possibly parts of NY.  This is because these are the most common places for foreigners to be while doing business. The system is forever growing and finding more ways to connect others around the world.  You may find that in the future that the GSM cellular phone is just another generic phone, because of the dynamic change in technology.
